Advocate? I didn’t know. I’m not sure how I completely missed this one. I guess that is why I’m glad I’m committed to ongoing learning about God and The Good Book. During a recent sermon, my pastor read this passage. I must have heard or read it before, but I did not get it. I did not really understand what it meant.
John 16:7,
“But, in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.”
Jesus is saying, “I’m going to go, but I’m going to send someone. The Advocate.” Then He explains who this Advocate is:
John 16:16-17,
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.
The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”
Wow. It took me time to absorb this. It is beyond cool. I’m not sure why Jesus had to leave so that The Holy Spirit could come, but I don’t need to know the why in order to appreciate that He did.
