I heard a sermon this past weekend that included a story about a man who was dealing with a dilemma. He was struggling with the fact that his wife no longer knew who he was and needed full-time care. Should he quit his job and take care of her or hire someone to take care of her full-time? I can’t image that decision. What struck me was what happened next. He took a walk with his wife around their block, and a drunken man walked by them, noticed them, and kept repeating, “I like that, I like that.” The man, upon reflecting, felt that God was speaking to him through the drunk.
How do you know when God is speaking to you through a person, a song, a pet, or a book? That is what I’ve been trying to ask Him for help with. I’m asking for the clarity to know when He is speaking to me.
When I was speaking in Italy, I had some challenges off stage that were really making me struggle. As I headed to the conference from my room, something caught my eye. As I stepped towards the elevator contemplating how to deal with my concerns, I looked down and saw this image.
Normally it would not have been on my radar screen at all. It’s just the name of the company that built the elevator. I’ve got this. And a big sense of relief came over me. No matter which way my struggle went, it was going to be OK. I liked the reminder that He was there.
When I brought the story up in my men’s group at church, I was reminded that it is good to clarify. Some questions that were suggested to me to consider were these:
- Is the thought Biblically-based?
- Is it just what I needed and relevant to the situation?
- Is it just a self-serving thought that I’m trying to justify?
What do you see? Are you looking? Do you just pass it off as coincidence?
Thank you, God, for Grace, Truth, Love, and Laughter,
Darren
