OK, so many of my stories are coming from traveling! Well, that’s where I spend a great deal of my time.
I love people watching when I am in airports. It is always fun! I try to “figure out” their stories. Who are they? Where are they from? Where are they going?
Well, I’m standing in line waiting to board a flight and I was standing next to a stunning woman (not the same woman as last week’s blog) and what appeared to be her boyfriend. They looked very happy and caring. What do they do, I wondered?
She could be a supermodel. He seems like just an average guy.
She pulled out a magazine and started reading. I could see the cover from where I was standing. Forbes Magazine. Wow! Not what I would have expected. Huh. This changed my original observation. Guess you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Then she turned and I noticed she had another magazine inside that one. I started cracking up when I saw the one on the inside was a celebrity gossip magazine! It was like she was teenage boy hiding a dirty magazine.
Funny how some people want others to see them differently. My comedy mentor, Vinnie, always told people, “Don’t judge me as a person by my ‘act.’” On-stage comedians have a persona; it is not truly who they are. But presenters and speakers should be the same person on-stage as off-stage. Are you?
P.S. Some of my frustration comes from people who “judge” me for offering my educational tools when I speak for free for non-profit organizations. They think all that I care about is “making money.”
I never get pushy. I just let people know what I have created in case they want to learn more. Generally, I earn $7,500 for a keynote speech and here I am doing this for free. Would they tell Steven Covey, if he were to speak for free, that he could not bring his books with him?
I wish they would get to know “who I am” and where my heart is before they judge me. Do they know that I give 10% of my speaking income to charity? Do they know I offer to speak for free to speaking clubs around the world whenever I travel? Have they ever donated time or money to prison clubs? I’ve spoken at three of them.
Oops. Got off on a tangent there!
