If I just had __________, I’d be happy. God help me! What is it for you right now? What’s that one thing you need? Ten years ago, what was it for you? Have you noticed that it changes throughout your life? Lately it has been clarity for me. In fact, over the past several weeks, I’ve actually been a bit depressed off stage.
I’ve been on my knees praying for it. I’ve been asking for guidance in that area from God and my God friends. It just hasn’t been coming to me.
I was reminded of a story that I heard about Mother Theresa. My paraphrase may not be accurate, but this is how I remember it. She asked a man who sought her guidance what he wanted her to pray about for him. He said, “Clarity.” She replied. “No.” She told him, “It is not clarity you need; it is trusting in God. That is what I’ll ask of God for you.” She told him she did not have clarity herself, but she did have trust in God.
Yikes. Sometimes we all need a reminder. I don’t need one thing to be happy. We need to be happy and trust God, and then we may or may not get that one thing. We need to be happy and appreciative without it. I was not. My bad. I then prayed for peace about my area of stress. I finally found some peace and was able to have a decent night’s sleep. I also started coming out of my slightly depressed state and started laughing a little again.
I guess I needed that reminder. You? I need God’s help with everything. More importantly, I have to trust Him. I need to be happy and content now without that one thing while I ask for help to receive it. If I just had TRUST, I’d be happy. How about you?
Thank you, God, for Truth, Love, and Laughter,
Darren
P.S. Thank you especially for grace.

Darren – I recently wrote a blog entitled “The One Thing” and the point you make about “If I just had X, I would be happy.” is a good one – indeed I added an addendum to my essay. I write that figuring out our One Thing is the project of a lifetime. Thank you for your essay – I’ve given this a lot of thought and your essay added something really valuable to my process. Bob
