(Reminder, this is just a journal of my mistakes, experiences, and thoughts along my journey to having a closer relationship to God. I do not claim to be an authority on the subject. If you want to know The Way, read The Bible.)
With all the talk going on about Prince’s passing, I was curious to learn more. In my Google searches I discovered that some people think that “Purple Rain” is meant to be about the end of the world. Do you think it is?
In the song “Let’s Go Crazy,” Prince is clearly talking about the afterlife, if you take it literally. It actually has a deep message that I never looked at closely before. Look up the lyrics, and see what you think.
Though I have heard and sung the words, it hit me in a different way when I just read the lyrics. I guess the true art in music is that it can have a different meaning for each of us. People can read into it whatever they want from their own perspective. What is your perspective?
I learned that Prince had been a man of faith and had ultimately become a Jehovah’s Witness. I was also reading over the lyrics for “Purple Rain.” Though I believe it was written before he changed faiths, one verse stood out to me. The words are,
“Honey, I know, I know,
I know the times are changing.
It’s time we all reach out
For something new, that means you too.
You said you want a leader,
But you can’t seem to make up your mind.
I think you better close it
And let me guide you through the purple rain.
Purple rain, purple rain,
Purple rain, purple rain.
If you know what I’m singing about up here,
C’mon, raise your hand.”
Can you see where he could be talking about God? Do you think he is? To me it’s almost as if he has you wondering whether he is talking about God, and then he says, “If you know what I’m singing about up here…” It seems as if he is saying, “Yup, that’s what I’m talking about.”
I like, too, that he says, “You said you want a leader. But you can’t seem to make up your mind. I think you better close it.” It sounds like he’s saying that we are noncommittal and that we better decide soon!
What do you think?
Thank you, God, for Grace, Truth, Love, and Laughter,
Darren
P.S. Thank you, especially, for grace.
