Growing up Catholic I can say that I honestly missed the message of actually reading The Bible myself. I mistakenly thought that the passages I heard each week in the priest’s homily was enough. I’m thankful for my upbringing, but understand God much better now. That being said, I have realized I have come a long way since being baptized again in 2014 and still have a long way to go.
At one of my boot camps, I was inspired by one of my closest friend’s brilliant observations. I came to the realization that if I truly believe in God and wish to know what He wants for me, then I need to read His book cover to cover. How dare I not do that? Ouch. I committed to reading 2-3 passages a day and it took me over a year, but I did it.
One of my challenges is and was understanding what I read, especially in the Old Testament. Being dyslexic doesn’t help either. I remember reading things two or three times having no clue what I just read. I had heard many times of Bible reading plans, but never did it.
The church I go to in Vegas is called Verve: Church for People Who Don’t Like Church. Getting involved in a men’s group was quite uncomfortable at first. Now, over time, it is one of the biggest growth experiences of my life.
The second most powerful help I have received has been a Verve Catalyst App. What helps me is that they give a passage a day to read and then break it down to make it more understandable. They summarize each passage into three sections: Say What? So What? Now What? Understanding makes it so much more helpful for me. They have it as a daily email, the app, and online at http://www.vervecatalysts.org. Personally, I like the app because I can focus without opening my email and getting squirrelled. I usually do this each day before I start my work.
What works for you?
Thank you, God, for Grace, Truth, Love and Laughter,
(Reminder, this is just a journal of my mistakes, experience and thoughts along my journey to having a closer relationship to God. I do not claim to be an authority on the subject. If you want to know The Way, read The Bible. Find a Bible based church and get connected with other believers in your area.)
What church do I attend? Verve Church in Las Vegas http://vivalaverve.org
P.S. Thank you especially for grace.
