Is the Universe Just Testing You?

Remember your tests from school?  Did you study for them?  Did you get feel anxiety?  I know I did.  I know in college I crammed before tests.  There always seemed to be another one coming.  Some days you had more than one.  Which one do you study more for? Ahhh!

There are certain Laws of the Universe. One being gravity.  You may have heard of the Law of Attraction, most of us have experienced Murphy’s Law.  The one that I was not aware of, I recently came to understand clearly.  I don’t think it has an official name.  Let me give you the scenario.

You have been thinking about your list of goals or changes you want to make in your life.  Maybe it is time to break off a relationship, change jobs or careers, or start a new home project.  You finally gain some clarity and you decide it is time to make it happen.  You commit.  You are excited.

Then, without warning within an hour or maybe it’s a day, something happens.  Some temptation or some occurrence that just screams… “Well, not just now…not just yet…maybe we can wait…maybe it is not such a great idea after all!”

The boyfriend/girlfriend does something sweet that they told you they would do a year ago.  It was almost like they felt it coming.

Or…You were going to leave that negative environment you work in and you get offered a promotion.  Would you  stay in the negative environment you were going to leave, or for more money, would you tell yourself you can tolerate it a little longer?

Have you noticed this?  My friend Mike pointed this out to me. Maybe I should call it Mike’s Law.  It make so much sense.  I believe it is like the Universe asking to you, “How serious are you?  It is calling out bluff on our dedication to our decision.  You are being tested.  The big difference is, your teacher didn’t tell you about this test.  You can’t cram for it, however, knowing it will happen, recognizing it helps us be prepared and gives us that opportunity to dig in a little deeper.

Too many times when I was ready to leave a relationship, this happened.  When I committed to a new project, some other “seemingly great occurrence” happened.  I’d see the “shiny thing” and get tempted in another direction.  Like negative friend that doesn’t want to see you make positive changes because it would leave them behind.  Have you ever stayed in a relationship too long because something nice happened and you justify getting sucked back in?  Leaving doesn’t mean they are bad, it could just mean there’s something better for you both.

Have you ever been side tracked by something shinny that stole your time or energy away from your goal?  I know I have.  Sometime I write these article to myself as a much needed reminder.

You will be tested. Mike’s Law is like the universe asking you, “Are you really committed?”  I hope your answer will be yes more often than not.  The challenge is you can’t answer in words.  You must answer in action.  You will notice Mike’s Law in your life again.  When you do consider the words of my coaching clients, Chandra, “Don’t quit, commit.”
