STAGE TIME: Powerful Presentation Lesson from Vegas Legends

Are you an actor or a speaker?
Every year around contest time, my fellow Champs and I get the same e-mails asking, “What is the ‘hot topic’ …or would _____ be a winning topic?”
We laugh. Though it is a fair question, it is the wrong perspective. Topics don’t win. Professional speakers don’t get paid for a topic. Original, personal stories presented with passion win and earn big pay checks.
There’s a show here in Vegas called Legends, featuring Madonna, Garth, Michael Jackson, and many more. Obviously, they’re not the actual Legends – they’re impersonators. A friend of mine mentioned that he had talked with one of the impersonators recently. The actor told him that she was barely earning enough money to pay her bills. The real Legend gets paid millions… but the impersonator barely makes enough to pay bills.
Why? Because here in Vegas, impersonators are plentiful. Actors are plentiful. So if she won’t do the job, there are a hundred people behind her ready to jump in and take the work.
“God has given you one face,
and you make yourself another.”
~ William Shakespeare
My topic for my winning World Championship speech was one of the oldest in the book. I told my story, my way. That’s what made it original.
What is your perspective on a topic? What is your story that will help us learn the lesson? What advice did you receive that transformed you?
That is what you should be talking about! Original is easier (it’s your story). Original is more transformational to your audience. Original pays more.
Will you be an actor or a Legend??

Thanks Darren,
I’m about to be very messy (with a message) in 10 days to a group and just when I had some reservations, your article confirmed once again that I need to do this.

Thank you for your words…an actor or legend…this makes so much sense!
Thank you again for all you do!

Thanks Darren for reminding us that we have great stories and personal accomplishments in our experiences. And our stories are worthy of sharing with others.
We just need to work on polishing them up and learning to delivering them with focused passion.

Darren,
Thank you for sharing your valuable insights, experiences, and learnings with us. Each newsletter gives me more to think about and to incorporate in my speeches.
Thank you and bless you.

Once again, you make a powerful point – one that is often overlooked. it’s all about the message. It is our personal stories and messages that are the ones an audience connects to the most. Thanks again for the insight.
